Brown sugar… delicious, sweet & moist, this molasses laced sugar is a fantastic flavor enhancer to many a recipes. That is, until you go to pull it out of the cupboard to find it not-so-moist. Rock hard as a matter of fact. If I was a betting woman, I’d say that brown sugar is one of the top three items I’ve thrown out due to improper food storage. Having these few brown-sugar-resurrection-tips handy is sure to save some $$ and frustration in the future, and rock hard brown sugar is a thing of the past!
If you are planning ahead, and notice that your sugar has hardened:
- Place hardened sugar in an airtight container along with a few apple slices. Sugar will be softened in about 24 hours. Remove apple slices and keep sugar sealed in container.
- Use the same technique with a slice of bread if apple slices are not available.
If you need the sugar immediately:
- Place hardened sugar in a microwave safe bowl, slightly dampen a paper towel and cover the bowl. Microwave in 20 – 30 second increments, until sugar has softened.
